I bought them because it said they went up to 28st.

Yes, it takes AAA batteries. You could put rechargeable ones in it, but you would have to have a separate charger.

Can these scales be recalibrated?

No, the scale normally recalibrates itself after each movement.

Can I recalibrate this as it is giving the wrong weight?

Yes, just get off the scale and press the button to change the unit. If you want to recalibrate it to zero, turn it on and let it weigh itself. Then press one foot on the scale and when you remove the foot, it should give a reading of zero. Then just step on it with both feet, and it should give an accurate reading.
