More lily-like than a true grass, this evergreen perennial features striking dark green, foliage that forms dense, lush tufts, providing an elegant backdrop for other plants or a standout feature on its own. Mondo grass's adaptable growth habit makes it perfect for a variety of garden designs. Use it to soften the edges of pathways, as a border for garden beds, or as a filler between pavers and stepping stones. Its compact size and tidy appearance make it an ideal choice for modern, minimalist gardens, Zen-inspired landscapes, or as a companion plant in mixed perennial borders. Spikes of lilac flowers, followed by berries, in summer. Also known as dwarf lilyturf or monkey grass. Takes sun or shade, though protect from hot afternoon sun in blazing inland areas. Provide well-draining, loamy, sandy, or clay soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system, then reduce watering once established. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to support healthy growth and vibrant foliage. You can divide clumps every few years in spring.
