- Félix Vallotton, né à Lausanne en 1865 et mort à Paris en 1925, qui figure parmi les pionniers de la peinture du XXe siècle, a produit une œuvre si singulière qu'il reste encore aujourd'hui difficile à classer. Il résista à la forte influence de l'impressionnisme de son temps et restera toujours parmi les nabis, dont ses amis Bonnard et Vuillard, celui que l'on surnommait le nabi étranger. Il ne se sentait d'ailleurs lui-même ni d'ici ni de là et c'est sans doute pourquoi il aima tant voyager.Cet ouvrage met l'accent sur une période importante de l'œuvre de Vallotton, de 1895 à 1925, et plus particulièrement sur les paysages qu'il a composés au fil de ses voyages ou de séjours prolongés dans certains lieux qu'il affectionnait.Étudier les paysages de Vallotton, c'est à la fois mieux comprendre sa technique basée sur des croquis saisis sur le motif, ou, débuts de la photographie oblige, à partir de ses propres clichés ou bien de cartes postales. Mais c'est aussi, au fil des années, étudier son évolution créatrice allant de plus en plus vers l'abandon des détails superflus pour atteindre une certaine forme d'abstraction avant l'heure.
