Would this hinge work on a tea box with walls that are 3/8 inch thick?
Answer: Not in my opinion and experience. Would need at least 1/2 in. Otherwise the hinge is too wide. So one could make the back or the hinge wall 1/2 in and the other 3 walls out of 3/8. I have used that approach many times. Just have to adjust joints a little to make it work. -

Answer: Max weight is about 45 Lbs. -

Answer: No unfortunately they cannot be cut. -

What is the total width of the plate in inches, from end to end?
Answer: The hinge does not lay flat. It is a stop inch and opens a little more than 90 degrees perhaps about 110 degrees. In its full open position, the total width from side to side is 3/4 of an inch. In its closed position, it is 7/16 wide. It is exactly 8 inches long. I use the hinge on 1/2 in wide wood to build boxes. Must be very careful to cut out the space (dado) the hinge fits on the 1/2 in wide wood leaving a 1/16 narrow strip. Sometimes the 1/16 strip breaks off, still works OK. Hope this answers your question.
