The Superman: American Alien Hardcover offers an imaginative and refreshing take on Clark Kent as he grows up and becomes a symbol. The individual issues, each featuring a different artist, capture the humanity and essence that makes Superman an icon. The writing is good, and the side characters all have great personalities. The idealism and wit of Superman are nicely represented in this book. However, there are some complaints about retCons on top of retCons and a lack of excitement in terms of superhero action. There is also controversy surrounding the author, which may prevent a sequel. In general, though, if you are a Superman fan, it is recommended that you give this book a read.
